Start with the basics
Install Gartiano like any Orbital theme: Install a theme on Shopify. Every plant field is optional. A block whose data is empty is hidden and nothing is guessed, so the theme works before every product has its plant data. Fill it in as you go.
Product metafields
Gartiano reads product metafields in the gartiano namespace. In your Shopify admin, add them under Settings → Custom data → Products, then fill them in on each product.
botanical(single line text): the botanical name, shown on cards, the Growing Sheet, the schedule, the calendar and the cart. Write the cultivar in single quotes, for example Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'.sow, plant, flowerandharvest(list of integers, 1 to 12): the months for the month strips, "What to do this month", the Garden calendar and the Flowering soonest sort.sun(list of single line text, choices Full sun, Part shade, Full shade) andsoil(list of single line text, choices Dry, Average, Wet): the facts table, Suits my spot and the Plan My Bed warnings.height, spreadandspacing(dimension): facts, the size of each plant circle, tall plants at the back, and the counts in "How many for my bed?" and Plan My Bed. A plant withoutspacingcan still be added with a typed quantity.pack_size(integer): plants per unit for bulbs and plugs sold in packs.hardiness, shipsandcoverage(single line text): hardiness, when it ships, and how far a seed packet goes.ship_months(list of integers): month marks next to "When it ships". The first month names the pre-order button, for example "Pre-order: ships in November".companions(list of products): the Planted with ring on the product page.care(rich text): the Care tab.width, materialandweather: the spec sheet for pots and tools.
Which product types count as plants is set in Theme settings → Plants and units. Everything else gets the spec sheet.
Filters: flowermonth and heightband
Search & Discovery can't filter on lists of numbers or on dimensions, so Gartiano uses two extra text fields only for filtering:
flower_month(list of single line text, choices January to December): the same months asflower, written as month names.height_band(single line text, choices Under 60 cm, 60 to 120 cm, Over 120 cm).
Turn on storefront filtering for sun, soil, flower_month and height_band. Then in Apps → Search & Discovery → Filters add them with the labels Sun, Soil, Flowering month and Height, plus Availability, Price and Product type if you like. They show as drawn tabs on collection and search pages. Without the app, the theme still shows its quick Sun and Soil tabs.
Plan My Bed and the Garden calendar
- In Online Store → Pages, create a page for each and pick the template page.plan-my-bed or page.garden-calendar.
- In the theme editor, open Theme settings → My Spot and choose those pages as the Plan My Bed page and the Garden calendar page.
Shoppers' saved beds and My Spot are kept in their own browser, so there is nothing to store on your side.
Other settings
- Theme settings → Plants and units: northern or southern hemisphere, and centimetres or inches.
