Selling plants online: what a nursery or garden centre needs from a Shopify theme
Plants have seasons, sizes, light needs and a planting calendar. Here is what a Shopify theme for a plant nursery, garden centre or seed shop should handle so customers buy the right plant.
Plants are unlike almost any other product. The same plant is sold at different sizes, it only ships in certain months, and whether it thrives depends on the customer's garden, not on the product. A plant shop that answers "will this grow in my spot?" sells more and gets fewer unhappy customers. We built Gartiano for nurseries and garden stores, and these are the needs we designed it around. They apply to any theme you are looking at.
Growing information, structured
Every plant needs the same set of facts, and customers compare them: light, soil, hardiness, watering, mature height and spread, flowering time.
- A growing panel or sheet on every product, always in the same place. Gartiano calls it a Growing Sheet.
- Data, not prose. In Shopify, store these facts as metafields so they can feed filters and comparisons instead of sitting in a description.
- Icons with words. Sun and water icons are quick to scan, but always label them; "partial shade" means more than half a sun symbol.
Filters for the customer's garden
The most useful filters on a plant shop are about the garden, not the product:
- Light: full sun, partial shade, shade.
- Size: mature height bands, so nobody plants a 6-metre shrub under a window.
- Flowering month or season, for people planning colour through the year.
- Hardiness or climate, if you ship across regions.
Gartiano's "Suits my spot" uses this idea: customers describe their spot and see plants that fit it. Even without that feature, check that the theme's filters can use metafields, and that the filter sheet works on a phone.
Seasons and availability
Bare-root roses ship in winter; bedding plants in spring. A plant theme should help you show this honestly:
- Seasonal availability on the product page ("ships October to March").
- Pre-order or notify-me for plants that are out of season, instead of a plain "sold out".
- A garden calendar that shows what to plant or sow each month. Gartiano has one built in, and it doubles as a reason for customers to come back every month.
Sizes and pot formats
The same plant can be a plug, a 9 cm pot, a 2-litre pot or a mature specimen. These are variants with very different prices and photos. Check that the theme:
