What a jewellery store needs from its Shopify theme
Jewellery is small, expensive and bought on trust. Here is what a Shopify theme for rings, necklaces and fine jewellery should do - from close-up photos to ring sizes, engraving and gifting.
Jewellery is one of the hardest things to sell online. The products are tiny on a screen, often expensive, frequently bought as gifts, and the buyer can't hold them to the light. A jewellery theme has to do more than look elegant: it has to answer the questions a good shop assistant would answer at the counter. This guide is what we learned designing Nottelume, our fine jewellery theme, and it applies to any theme you are considering.
Photography: close, consistent and zoomable
A ring is a few millimetres wide. On a phone, the photo is all the shopper has.
- Large galleries with real zoom. Pinch-to-zoom on mobile and a hover or click zoom on desktop. Check the demo: does zoom show more detail, or just a blurrier version of the same image?
- Consistent framing. Jewellery looks cheap when every product sits at a different size on a different background. A theme that frames every image the same way (we use an arched window in Nottelume) makes a catalogue shot over several days look like one collection.
- On-body photos. A necklace on a neck answers "how long is it?" faster than any measurement. Make sure the gallery handles a mix of product shots and on-model shots without awkward crops.
- Video. A few seconds of a stone catching light sells better than a still. Check that the theme can put short videos in the product gallery, not only in a separate section.
Variants: metals, stones and sizes
Jewellery variants are more complicated than "S, M, L". A ring can come in three metals, two stone colours and fifteen sizes.
- Swatches for metal and stone that change the photo when selected. Gold and silver versions of the same ring are different products in the shopper's mind.
- Ring sizes that don't overwhelm. A dropdown is fine; a wall of 15 buttons on a phone is not. Sold-out sizes should be visible but disabled.
- A ring size guide on the product page that explains how to measure at home, with a conversion between systems (US, UK, EU) if you sell internationally.
Personalisation and gifting
A lot of jewellery is bought as a gift. The theme should make that easy without extra apps where possible:
- Engraving with a character limit and a preview of the text, so customers don't type a paragraph into a ring band.
- Gift notes in the cart, and an option to hide prices on the packing slip if your fulfilment supports it.
