What a skincare store needs from its Shopify theme
People rarely buy skincare one bottle at a time. Here is what a Shopify theme for a skincare or beauty brand should do - routines, ingredients, skin types, how-to-use and honest product pages.
A skincare shop isn't really selling single products. It sells routines: a cleanser, something that treats, something that protects, in the morning and again at night. Shoppers also arrive with questions a photo can't answer: what's in it, will it suit my skin, how do I use it, and in what order? A good skincare theme answers those questions on the page, in the order people ask them. This guide is what we learned designing Kaolume, our skincare and beauty theme, and the checklist works for any theme you're comparing.
Organise the shop by step, not only by product type
Most beauty shoppers think in steps. "I need something for after cleansing" is a more common starting point than "show me all serums".
- Navigation by routine step. A header or collection layout that reads Cleanse, Treat, Protect (or your own steps) helps people find their place quickly. Kaolume puts a numbered step row in the header for this reason.
- Numbered or clearly labelled products. When every product says which step it belongs to, a shopper can build a routine without opening each page.
- Concern and skin type as filters. Dry, oily, sensitive, breakouts, dullness: these are the words customers use. Check that the theme can turn your product tags into filter chips, and that it works with Shopify's own filters for price and availability.
Let people buy the whole routine at once
The single most useful skincare feature is often a routine builder: pick a time of day, see one product per step, swap any step, and add everything to the bag together.
- Morning and evening should differ. Sunscreen belongs in the morning; heavier treatments often go at night. A builder that shows the same list twice misses the point.
- Each line stays editable. Adding a routine should create normal cart lines the shopper can still change or remove, not a locked bundle they have to empty and rebuild.
- It should run on your data. In Kaolume's Shopify version, the morning and evening picks come from product tags, and two settings decide which words in a product name mean day or night. Whatever theme you choose, ask how the builder decides what goes where, and whether you can control it without code.
Ingredients and how-to-use belong on the product page
Skincare customers read labels. If the full ingredient list sits in a photo of the bottle, many of them leave to find it somewhere else.
