Free vs paid Shopify themes: what you actually get for the money
What a paid Shopify theme adds over a free one - support, specialised features, a look nobody else has - what it doesn't, and a simple way to decide. With real prices and no upsell.
A Shopify theme is the one design decision every store makes on day one, and the choice looks simple: free or paid. In practice, the useful question is narrower. What would a paid theme do for your catalogue that a free one can't? This guide answers it with real numbers. We sell paid themes and give away a free one, so we've tried to be fair to both.
What paid Shopify themes cost
Paid themes are a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Across the 326 paid themes it tracks on the Shopify Theme Store, ShopThemeDetector puts the median at $300 and half of them between about $212 and $360 (source, October 2026). Themes sold outside the Theme Store, ours included, set their own prices. Most licences cover one store; a second store means a second licence.
What free themes already cover
Shopify's 24 free themes (all made by Shopify, see Best free Shopify themes in 2026) cover more than many people expect: responsive layouts, a mega menu, a sticky header, colour swatches and swatch filters on almost all of them, regular updates from Shopify and fast code. For a new store testing products, that's enough.
Free doesn't have to mean basic, either. Some studios release complete themes for free; ours, Dyecard, is a full fashion theme with colour-led collection views, five languages and two presets, free with a Google sign-in.
What a paid theme adds
- Support from the people who built it. This is the most underrated part. A paid licence usually includes a support period, so "how do I make the size guide show up?" gets a real answer instead of a forum thread. Ours include 3 months of support, with replies within 3 business days, and updates for life.
- Features made for your kind of store. Paid themes are often built around an industry: plant data and bed planning for a garden centre, spec comparison for electronics, swing-tag product cards for fashion. Getting the same from a general free theme often means apps, and apps are monthly.
- A look that isn't the default. With fewer stores on each design, a paid theme helps a new brand look like itself.
- Demo content that matches. A good premium theme ships with presets and a demo store you can recreate, so your store looks finished sooner.
