Best free Shopify themes in 2026: an honest comparison
Shopify's own 24 free themes, what the Horizon and Dawn families are good at, where every free theme stops, and when a free theme from an independent studio (including ours) is the better fit. Written by people who also sell paid themes, so we show our sources.
"Free" covers very different things in Shopify themes. Some free themes are excellent and maintained by Shopify itself. Some are a stripped-down demo of a paid theme. A few are complete themes that an independent studio gives away. This guide sorts them out. One thing up front: we make Shopify themes, paid and free, so every figure below links to where it came from, and we tell you where Shopify's own themes are the better choice.
How many free Shopify themes are there?
On the Shopify Theme Store, the price filter shows 24 free themes next to 1,323 paid ones (checked 26 October 2026). Every one of the 24 is made by Shopify. They come in two families:
- The Horizon family (10 themes): Horizon, Atelier, Dwell, Fabric, Heritage, Pitch, Ritual, Savor, Tinker and Vessel. Shopify introduced them in 2025; they are built with theme blocks that can sit inside other blocks, which gives you more layout freedom in the editor. Horizon has been the default theme for new stores since.
- The Dawn family (14 themes): Dawn, Colorblock, Craft, Crave, Origin, Publisher, Refresh, Ride, Rise, Sense, Spotlight, Studio, Taste and Trade. These share Dawn's older, simpler structure.
What Shopify's free themes do well
- They're maintained by Shopify. Updates arrive regularly and they follow every new platform feature first.
- They're fast. Both families keep their code lean.
- The basics are covered. On the Theme Store's own feature filters, all 24 free themes list a mega menu and a sticky header, and 23 of 24 list colour swatches and swatch filters.
- Most tutorials assume them. If you follow a video or an app's install guide, it was very likely recorded on Dawn or Horizon.
Where free themes stop
The same filters show the gaps. Among the 24 free themes, none lists a countdown timer, only 11 list quick view, 13 list a stock counter and 10 list EU translations (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish). The Horizon family generally lists more of these than the Dawn family, so if you're starting from scratch, start there.
The bigger issue for many merchants isn't a missing feature. It's that a free Shopify theme looks like a free Shopify theme. Thousands of stores start from the same defaults, and shoppers notice. On the Theme Store, Dawn has 36% positive reviews, Horizon 36% and Craft 56% (shown on the listings, 26 October 2026); the complaints tend to be about layouts that can't change without code and stores that don't look like the demo once real products go in.
